Porcelain Veneers London: Uses, Procedure, and More

Many UK adults are unhappy with their teeth. A 2019 study of 665 participants, found that 40% per cent of the UK population are not fully comfortable with the appearance of their teeth and would change something if they could.

Though clearly not uncommon, these insecurities can have a debilitating impact on your confidence levels and self-esteem. If you are unhappy with your smile – whether it’s one cracked tooth you would like to fix, or you desire a full smile makeover due to teeth discolouration or shape – Dr Joe Oliver can help you achieve your goals.

What are veneers?

Veneers are our solution to helping you achieve that white, sparkling, natural smile you have always dreamed of.

Although there are many cosmetic dentistry treatments on the market, recent years have seen growing interest in veneers.

The increased popularity can be put down to promotion by celebrities and social media and improved technology meaning the treatment is more effective and efficient than ever.

Veneers are a long-lasting cosmetic dental treatment used to improve your smile and teeth colour. Whether you have crooked, chipped or discoloured teeth, veneers may be the best solution for you.

They are hand-made, wafer-thin (0.2mm) porcelain shells that are placed onto the surface of existing teeth, and are designed to perfectly simulate the look and feel of your natural teeth.

You can personalise the shape, size and shade of the veneer to suit the shape of your face, mouth and desired look.

Who are veneers suitable for?

Veneers are suitable to fix just one tooth or a whole mouthful of teeth. They can be used for anyone who has:

  1. Chipped or broken tooth/teeth
  2. Discoloured teeth
  3. Gaps between the teeth
  4. Teeth which have become worn down
  5. Misaligned or irregularly shaped teeth
  6. Gummy smiles

There are, however, alternative smile and teeth whitening treatments available if you are not ready to make the commitment to veneers.

What types of veneers are available?

Porcelain veneers

A long-lasting, natural-looking solution. The veneers are crafted in the finest detail by highly skilled specialist technicians in a dental laboratory, so they look just like natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are usually fitted in two or three appointments and usually require some minimal preparation of your existing teeth. In some cases, we can place non-preparation veneers. The amount of preparation needed varies from case to case and we strive to keep preparation and your clinic visits to an absolute minimum.

Composite veneers

This option can be fixed in one visit to a clinic. Layers of resin are applied directly to the tooth, masking any damaged enamel, which is then sculpted to the correct shape and size. Composite veneers are a great option if you have stained or slightly damaged teeth, such as a chipped/cracked tooth/teeth and small gaps.

Why choose porcelain veneers?

At Dr Joe Oliver’s, a leading porcelain veneers London dentist, we believe that hand-layered, glass porcelain veneers are the most reliable option for full integration with the tooth. They are minimally invasive and provide optimal aesthetic results.

Porcelain has the best and longest track record for endurance out of all veneer materials. Unlike industrially manufactured alternatives, they require intensive effort and an exceptional level of craftsmanship to produce. Nature never takes any shortcuts and neither do we when it comes to creating naturally beautiful aesthetics.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Out of the many cosmetic dentistry options available (including, crowns, bridges, implants and dentures) veneers are a highly durable way to improve your smile.

The lifetime of your veneers is dependent on your dental care routine, your lifestyle and the type of veneer you choose.

If you care for your porcelain veneers properly, they can last between 15-20 years. Composite veneers should last between four to eight years.

Dental veneers London: aftercare

We will give you all of the required care guidelines after your porcelain veneers have been fitted at our Manchester or London dental clinics , but you always have the option to keep in contact and arrange more visits if you need additional information or face any issues post-treatment.

We advise regular check-ups (even if you don’t have veneers) but this will allow us to keep track of the condition of your veneers and make sure you are caring for them properly. Prioritising good communication with your dentist will ensure that your veneers last as long as possible and that your natural teeth and gums remain healthy.

As a basic instruction, you should treat your dental veneers as you would your natural teeth – brush with a non-abrasive toothpaste and floss twice daily. Composite dental veneers can also become stained (so avoid coffee, tobacco and red wine). At some point, your dental veneers will need to be replaced – by sticking to a good oral hygiene regime you can prolong the date when this will be needed.

Do veneers hurt?

Most patients report no pain or discomfort during the veneer treatment, probably because it is minimally invasive and we use a local anaesthetic to numb the teeth. The most intensive part of the procedure is that we usually,  but not always minimally prepare the teeth.

How much do porcelain veneers cost in London?

Dr Oliver uses a unique creative methodology for all his veneer patients, to give you a long-lasting smile that’s as individual as you are. As such,  the cost and prices for veneers vary from person to person. Our porcelain veneer prices start from £975 per veneer.

What are the benefits of dental veneers?

There is a common misconception that porcelain veneers are weaker than natural teeth but, when bonded correctly, the strength and durability of a veneer is comparable to that of a natural tooth. Indeed, due to his meticulous approach to veneers, Dr Oliver has many patients who have had their veneers for more than 25 years.

Unlike procedures like crowning, veneers require very little in the way of tooth reduction, often as little as 3% compared to 75% for crowns. Making best use of advances in material science and bonding technology, porcelain veneers conform to what is known as the biomimetic principle of dentistry.

Put simply, it is the choice of procedures and materials based on their ability to mimic natural teeth, while protecting and preserving them. To understand a bit more about this practice, please consult the BACD British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. (You can also include AACD American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry if you choose)

Are there any negatives?

The main reason people may be reluctant to get porcelain veneers is because the process is irreversible.

Veneers may not be suitable when a large part of the natural tooth is missing, since it is glued onto the front of the natural tooth. Additionally, they may not be suitable for those who have gum disease – but we can evaluate the health of your teeth during an initial consultation meeting.
